Lisa Svalos is a girl who has not come to terms with the loss of her mother, who was murdered two years earlier by an axe-wielding murderer. Her father, Dell, later married a woman named Janet, and Lisa has a stepsister named Taffy. Lisa spends most of her time in the cemetery.
Lisa goes to a party with Taffy, who encourages her to be more social. She has an awkward encounter with Michael, whom she has a crush on, and is drugged by one of his friends. Later, she is beaten by her lab partner, Doug. Lisa returns to the cemetery to talk to the grave of a man who died in 1837. The man was a pianist who fell in love with a woman who later left him for another man. He was killed after being struck by lightning. After Lisa leaves, a bolt of lightning strikes the grave and the man is resurrected as a zombie. The monster breaks into the house. Lisa realizes that he is the man she fell in love with and decides to hide him in her closet. The monster is silent and covered in gravel.
Lisa claims to be a burglar to explain the chaos the monster has caused, but Janet claims she made it up for attention. She threatens to have Lisa committed to a mental hospital. The monster kills Janet and cuts off her ear, and the two then dump Janet's body in a cemetery. Lisa sews Janet's ear onto the monster, but discovers that the parts don't work without electricity. They use Teffy's tanning bed to revive the ear, which also restores the monster to a more human appearance. Lisa lures Doug to the cemetery so she can cut off his hand for the monster. The monster kills Doug and hides his body with Janet's. The monster is once again able to play the piano, and he and Lisa begin to form a bond. The plot of the movie doesn't end there...
